As it stands, Swayman is in a contract dispute with the Boston Bruins. There have been numerous reports that he wants a long-term deal. However, it would appear as though the Bruins are not interested in giving him that. Instead, they are only offering him four years at a fraction of the price.
Meanwhile, Shesterkin is going to be on tap for a new contract as well, and there is this sense that he is going to ask for $12 million. He is considered the best in the league, so one would have to wonder whether or not the Rangers are that desperate to retain his services.
Now, Pierre LeBrun of TSN is offering some insight into what both of these goalies are looking for. Essentially, they both want to set the market for goaltenders moving forward. Shesterkin wants more than what Carey Price made on his deal, which was worth $10.5 million per year. Meanwhile, Swayman just wants his eight years at a similar price.
These kinds of contracts have the potential to change the NHL forever. It could become the standard to pay goaltenders eight-figure salaries. That said, with goal-scoring returning to the NHL in a big way, it remains to be seen whether or not such a strategy would actually be smart for the roster. No matter what, their contracts are going to be fascinating.
