The Carolina Hurricanes find themselves in an odd place as a team right now. Even though they have fielded some of the strongest teams in franchise history, the team is still insufficient to overcome obstacles. With several important players testing their free agency this summer, the team will be put to the test.
Don Waddell's dismissal also required the team to appoint a new general manager ahead of one of the most significant summers in franchise history. The Hurricanes intend to change the General Manager's responsibilities, shifting it to more of a liaison role for higher management, according to reports. Upon learning of the role's changing orientation, a number of experienced contenders withdrew their applications.
With those choices, the Hurricanes have formally appointed Eric Tulsky as the new general manager, going back to what was probably always the plan.
Tulsky has an analytics background and has been passed over for positions with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning in the past year during interviews for other positions. Although Tulsky is a change, at this point in the Hurricanes' history, he is the safe pick.
It seems like the wrong moment to reinvent the wheel, especially with so many seasoned hockey brains available.
