Players and officials often have decent enough relationships, engaging in a lot of dialogue with one another throughout the years both on the ice and away from it. However, sometimes players and officials simply don't like each other. We've seen players like Michael Bunting earn a bad reputation with the officials refusing to give him the benefit of the doubt. It appears as though Tony DeAngelo also doesn't get along with the officials very well, as we found out this week.
DeAngelo and the Canes took on the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday in a game that Carolina won 6-3. However, the win wasn't without its controversy. With under two minutes left in the third, DeAngelo headed to the corner to retrieve a puck, but ran right into a referee and fell to the ice. It was obviously an accident, but nevertheless, DeAngelo proceeded to get up and chew out the official, which earned him two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct.
That apparently wasn't the only penalty that DeAngelo was assessed over the ordeal as the scoresheet also shows that Tony D was given a 10-minute misconduct at 20:00 of the third period. It's unclear what happened to earn him the additional misconduct, but it's probably safe to assume that DeAngelo didn't let it go and probably continued to run his mouth, which has been a problem for him in the past.
As of this moment, there has been no supplemental discipline for DeAngelo handed down by the league, but we'll have to keep an eye out for any announcements on that. If and when we hear something, we'll share an update.
