Developing young NHL defenceman usually takes longer compared to a forward because of all the details of the game along with the time it takes to grow physically to withstand the big bodies of the game.

When the Ottawa Senators drafted Lassi Thomson 19th overall in 2019 they thought they had a good piece to add to the defence. Scouts were excited about his booming shot from the point, good skating and puck moving ability.

Last season Thomson played primarily for the Belleville Senators putting up 33 points in 56 game. Thomson would only play 2 NHL games last year registering zero points and was only trusted for an average of 10:53 in ice time.

Ottawa announced they will place Thomson on waivers to demote him to the AHL.

Roster update: The #Sens have completed the following transactions, cont.

Players placed on waivers for the purposes of assignment to @BellevilleSens training camp: RW Currie, D Heatherington, RW Pilon, D Thomson.

Their is a very good chance that Thomson could get claimed by a team looking for defensive depth.

The Senators top four of Jake Sanderson, Thomas Chabot, Jakob Chychrun and Artyom Zub could have a real argument of being the best four of the Atlantic division.
