As is usually the case with RFAs who do not have a contract in place, Zegras is not expected to attend training camp without a new deal. Both sides are believed to still be far apart on both term and salary.
On Thursday, TVA Sports reporter Renaud Lavoie revealed that a team in the Eastern Conference has shown interest in acquiring Zegras from the Ducks. The Buffalo Sabres. Lavoie mentioned, in a quote translated from French to English, that the Sabres are looking to make the playoffs and that Zegras probably helps them do just that.
If the Sabres are able to add Trevor Zegras, it would give their playoff hopes a huge boost and add to a young forward group that includes Tage Thompson, Dylan Cozens and Payton Krebs among others.
The Sabres have a lot of young players and plenty of draft capital with which to strike a deal. Also, according to CapFriendly, the Sabres have $8.7 million available in cap space for the 2023-24 season. Is it enough to get a deal done with Zegras? It's tough to say. It should be enough for a player whose career high is 65 points, but it's likely that the Zegras camp wants more with the cap going up in 2024-25. The last thing a young star wants is to sign a lower value, long-term deal only to turn around and have a breakout season, which would have put them in a position to earn a higher AAV.
