Former Stanley Cup Winner leaves North America and signs contract
After only playing 100 National Hockey League games, it appears that Gemel Smith has finally given up on his NHL dreams. Smith played parts of 9 seasons professionally in North America and was a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning Stanley Cup wining team.
Now, according to multiple reports, Smith has agreed to a contract to play the 2023-24 season for Dinamo Minsk, Belarus' lone KHL club.
Smith, 29, was picked in the 4th round of the 2012 NHL Draft, by the Dallas Stars. He appeared in 01 games with the Dallas Stars, Boston Bruins, Tampa Bay Lighting and finally the Detroit Red Wings. In his career he scored 12 goals and added 13 assists.
Smith hoisted the Stanley Cup in 2021 as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning, despite not meeting requirements to have his name on the Cup. The Lightning eventually petitioned the league and Smith was included. Good luck in your future Gemel.
