The Golden Knights were looking to terminate Lehner's contract so that $5 million would be off of their books. Of course, this was bad for Lehner given the fact that he owes a lot of debts and is going through bankruptcy. Well, now, both sides have come to a resolution that is mutually beneficial.
Essentially, the Golden Knights will pay out Lehner's contract. However, it will not go against their salary cap. This decision was approved by the league as they noted how Lehner did violate a team rule, and therefore, the Golden Knights can have an exception. The Knights do Lehner a solid, and the team faces zero cap consequences.
This decision by the league is controversial, as some fans believe that the Knights have consistently gotten preferential treatment. In the tweets below, you can see just how angry some fans are about this. Some are even calling the Knights cheaters. That said, it is important to understand that this decision is not unprecedented and it is simply how the CBA works. This just proves that a lot of hockey fans simply do not know what they are talking about.
