Typically, getting into a fight is not grounds for a suspension. However, it was his method of getting to the fight which was a problem. To set the scene, Davies unleashed a huge hit on Victor Hedman that made the Lightning upset. Subsequently, Davies had to fight Nikita Kucherov.
Later in the game, Geekie got off of his bench for a line change but then went immediately to Davies and started another battle. Typically, you cannot do this. According to Frank Seravalli, leaving the bench with the purpose of fighting is a 10-game suspension. However, there are exceptions. For instance, if you are leaving the bench for a legal line change, then the punishment is much less severe.
Because Geekie was participating in a legal line change, he will not be hit with 10 games. However, he still started a fight after leaving his team's bench, which means he can expect perhaps a game or two for his troubles. He has a hearing later today, and it will be interesting to see what the league decides.
After a hectic week involving Cedric Pare, Arber Xhekaj, Tim Stutzle, and many others, it is clear that the NHL needs to do something. Too many incidents are taking place, and we haven't even reached the regular season yet. Something must be in the water.
