In an unexpected turn, Jake Guentzel has become a focal point of trade discussions this season, and the reason behind it may have just surfaced.

Jake Guentzel Rejects Significant Contract Extension Offer

According to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, negotiations for an extension were initiated, but the seasoned forward ultimately declined what seemed to be a compelling offer.

«Not enough term and not enough money for Jake Guentzel and his camp, hence why a deal didn't come to fruition.»

Reportedly, Pittsburgh put forth a deal around $8.5 million AAV over six years. However, as Seravalli highlighted, this fell short in terms of both duration and financial terms for the 29-year-old.

Possible Trade Looming for Pittsburgh?

With Guentzel's current extension set to expire this summer, recent trade speculations now align with the apparent contract standoff. Yet, there seems to be a willingness from the team to revisit extension talks.

In his 499-game career so far, Guentzel has amassed an impressive record of 219 goals and 463 points, often sharing the ice with stars like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

The question now is whether the team is prepared to meet his potentially higher value, possibly exceeding the initial $8.5 million offer. Only time will tell.
