Pavel Datsyuk draws international criticism that could put Hall of Fame induction in jeopardy
Pavel Datsyuk is currently under fire on an international level thanks to a new statement put out by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress in regards to Datsyuk's alleged ties to the Russian government.
When it was revealed that Datsyuk would be making the Hall of Fame, the UCC spoke out. Subsequently, the HHOF responded, standing by their decision to honor the Detroit Red Wings legend. Now, however, the UCC is clapping back yet again. This time, it is because Datsyuk attended a tournament that was honoring two deceased Russian veterans.
CEO and Executive Director of the UCC Ihor Micalchyshyn, spoke out in a new statement, that will certainly turn some heads.
"Our question, therefore, is whether the Hockey Hall of Fame deems it appropriate to honor an individual who (through his apparent attendance at an event that honoured 'veterans' of the very Armed Forces committing these crimes) this signals his support for the genocide Russia is committing against the Ukrainian people." [...]
"Alternatively, of course, Mr. Datsyuk could publicly condemn Russia's war against Ukraine and explain the circumstances under which the Russian media came to write the reports in question."
This is a very complex issue that could set a huge precedent. If the HHOF were to rescind Datsyuk's induction, it would open up a whole can of worms. Whether or not the Hall of Fame wants that kind of attention, remains to be seen. What we do know, however, is that UCC will not be backing off of their standpoint, anytime soon.
