Adam Johnson of the Nottingham Panthers was tragically killed in an on-ice incident involving Matt Petgrave of the Sheffield Steelers, back in 2023.

The incident was shocking and many fans were disturbed by how it all went down. The Elite Ice Hockey League sprung into action at the time, knowing that the safety of its players was paramount. Johnson's death subsequently led to action from various hockey leagues around the world, whether that be professional leagues or youth leagues.

Now, the American Hockey League is implementing some new rules of its own. According to a new press release from the league, all players and officials will now need to wear cut-resistant neck protection. There are no exceptions, which means every single player will be protected

"All AHL skaters, referees and linespersons, regardless of age or experience, will be required to wear approved cut-resistant neck protection beginning this fall. Cut-resistant socks and wrist sleeves were previously mandated for AHL players and officials beginning with the 2023-24 season."

Overall, this is a massive move that could spark other leagues to do something similar. While some players find neckguards restrictive, their lives could ultimately be saved by this one small piece of equipment. A little bit of discomfort is a small price to pay for your life.
