In case it wasn't evident earlier, the Calgary Flames' impending rebuild is now officially confirmed. The team traded forward Andrew Mangiapani today, the day after they dealt standout goaltender Jacob Markstrom.
On his official X account, Elliotte Friedman revealed that Mangiapane is joining the Washington Capitals.
With 417 games played, Mangiapane was selected in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. The product of Toronto, Ontario, scored 109 goals, dished out 106 assists for 215 points, and accrued 181 penalty minutes in his stint with Calgary.
Mangiapane, who was selected in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL draft, has played his whole career for the Calgary Flames. Like most of the Flames, the forward had a difficult season previous year. Mangiapane participated in 75 games, contributing 26 assists along with 14 goals. With the departure of yet another important core player, this transaction probably means a complete rebuild for the Flames.
It will be interesting to watch the strategy the team employs because it seems certain that they want to place close to the bottom of the standings the following season.
