Insiders: Sidney Crosby to Have a Change of Heart and Shake Up the Trade Deadline?
Several NHL insiders have discussed the possibility of Sidney Crosby getting moved at the trade deadline this year.
Could the Penguins actually do it? Would Kyle Dubas even consider moving Sidney Crosby?
Would ownership allow it? Does Sid even want to go to a contender?
These are all questions that would need to be answered before the Penguins let go of their franchise icon of the past two decades.
All things must pass though, and the end of the Sidney Crosby era in Pittsburgh is certainly visible on the horizon.
Currently, he is signed for two more seasons after this one, which will take him into his 40s, and likely, the end of his career.
Crosby has told reporters that he intends to finish his career with the Penguins. But after winning the Four Nations tournament with Team Canada, has the drive to win crept back into his mind?
After all, who among us, other than Penguins fans perhaps, wouldn't want to see Crosby lift the Stanley Cup one more time?
Hayes recently discussed this possibility again on TSN's Overdrive, saying that if he does get moved, it seems like it would happen in the offseason, but it would be better to get it done now for both sides.
"I'm not sure it happens at the trade deadline. It feels like an offseason move for Sid. If you're going to get to that conclusion, do it as quickly as you can. If its in the back of your mind that 'okay I don't think I can finish this dance, its going to get worse before it gets better' and that's likely what will happen in Pittsburgh, then get out in front of it."
Former NHL goaltender Jamie McLennan added to the conversation, noting that we have not heard a single rumor about Crosby getting traded this season.
However, he added that we also did not hear anything before the Colorado Avalanche traded
Mikko Rantanen, and Colorado is notably a team that could afford Crosby.
Furthermore, Crosby would be united with his good friend
Nathan MacKinnon, who helped him win the Four Nations trophy.
"How about this? Did anyone, any insider get an inkling on the Rantanen trade? That was feathers, for everybody. Well that's the same team (Colorado) that we're talking about. On one side, they've been pretty quiet, so if they're going to do anything, its a vail of secrecy."
If the Penguins were to trade Crosby, it would seem reasonable that they wouldn't want that news to leak, so maybe McLennan has a point.
We will just have to wait and see what the next week and a half has in store for us.
