The NHL's Department of Player Safety made an announcement on Tuesday, summoning New York Rangers rookie forward Matt Rempe for a hearing.
"NY Rangers' Matt Rempe will have a hearing today for elbowing New Jersey's Jonas Siegenthaler." Player Safety said.
The incident under review took place during Monday night's game between the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils. In the closing moments of the second period, Rempe attempted to make a hit on Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler, but his elbow made contact with Siegenthaler's head.
Rempe received a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for elbowing, while New Jersey DevilsKurtis MacDermid received a ten-minute misconduct for his reaction to the hit. MacDermid attempted to confront Rempe but was restrained by an official.
"Matt Rempe was assessed a five-minute major for elbowing and a game misconduct for this hit."
Given Rempe's clean record, it's likely that any suspension he receives will be less than five games. However, it's worth noting that Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher, also a first-time offender, received a five-game suspension for a similar incident.
