The waiver wire saw some rare action this afternoon as both the New York Islanders and the New Jersey Devils decided to make some big moves.

Throughout the early portion of the season, the waiver wire has slowed down significantly when you compare it to what we saw during training camp. Of course, this makes a lot of sense as training camp is when you look to cut players and make some truly tough choices.

However, it appears as though the Islanders have made a tough choice on former first-round pick Julien Gauthier. After a bad game, he was placed on waivers. This has certainly been a tough stretch for Gauthier who has been bouncing around the professional hockey world, quite a bit. He just hasn't been able to stick in the way that scouts probably thought he would in his draft year.

Last season, Gauthier was decent as he had 5 goals and 9 points in 27 games played. Moreover, he had 17 games played with the Bridgeport Islanders and was also a part of their playoff efforts.

Meanwhile, the Devils put Adam Beckman on waivers. Last season with the Wild, the 23-year old had only two assists in 11 games with the team. Despite some solid AHL production, the franchise moved on. Beckman had yet to play a single game with the Devils so far this season, so this should not be much of a surprise whatsoever.
