The Anaheim Ducks and Trevor Zegras seem to be headed toward a contentious divorce, if they haven't already. You would have to assume that general manager Pat Verbeek holds the cards with a trade chip like the 23-year-old center from Bedford, New York, assuming he is truly available to be traded. Perhaps not so quickly, though.
Zegras, who will join the Ducks for his fourth season in the NHL, was dependable, participating in 75 and 81 games in each of the previous three seasons. Subsequently, he suffered from injuries that restricted him to just fifteen games in the previous season, and his output declined.
The Montreal Canadiens are a team that is trying to add some scoring to their lineup. Given their extensive list of prospects, it would make sense, but will they part with David Reinbacher or Kaiden Guhle? Most likely not.
Though it's unclear, it appears like Zegras has played his final game with the Ducks. Verbeek sent Jamie Drysdale to Philadelphia the previous season, demonstrating his willingness to take calculated risks to advance his team. Who knows what else he has planned? The Ducks will ultimately run out of time to use their reconstruction as an excuse, but at what point does that stop?
