Tragedy Strikes The Hockey Community As Former OHL Defenceman Suddenly Passes Away
It's with heavy hearts that we share somber news from the hockey world this Monday night, as the Ontario Hockey League mourns the loss of former defenseman Paul Giallonardo.
In a heartfelt announcement on their website, the Ontario Hockey League expressed sorrow over Giallonardo's passing at the young age of 39 after bravely battling cancer. The league stated,
"The Ontario Hockey League is mourning the loss of an alumnus gone far too soon. Former Windsor Spitfires defenceman Paul Giallonardo passed on Sunday night following a battle with cancer. He was just 39 years old."
Giallonardo made a significant impact during his four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, all with the Windsor Spitfires from 2001 to 2005, notching 91 points in 247 career games. Afterward, he continued his hockey journey, playing for St. Thomas University for the next three seasons, and concluding his playing career in 2008-09 by joining Alleghe in Italy before announcing his retirement.
During this challenging time, our thoughts are with Giallonardo's family and friends here at HockeyUnplugged.
