Sergei Kostitsyn's stint with the Montreal Canadiens from 2007 to 2010 was marred by both on and off-ice controversies. Linked to an organized crime figure in Montreal in 2009, Kostitsyn faced scrutiny for his actions, and his reputation as a teammate suffered.

Former Canadiens defenseman Hal Gill, speaking on The Spittin Chiclets podcast, didn't hold back, labeling Kostitsyn a "horrible person in Montreal" and a "bad teammate." Gill expressed relief when Kostitsyn was traded to Nashville in 2010.

A surprising twist occurred when Gill, traded to the Predators less than two years later, found Kostitsyn transformed upon their reunion. The once problematic teammate had become friendly and committed to his game.

"He comes up to me: Hello! How are you? How are you doing?"

Gill recalled. Intrigued by the change, Gill learned that Predators head coach Barry Trotz had invested time in connecting with Kostitsyn.

Trotz, through routine morning cereal sessions, built a relationship that proved pivotal. Kostitsyn delivered his best NHL performances in Nashville from 2010 to 2012, tallying seasons of 50 and 43 points.

While Kostitsyn's Montreal tenure left a tainted legacy, his transformative journey in Nashville underscores the influence of mentorship and a supportive team environment on a player's career.
