In a statement he issued, Kassian shared his thoughts:
The 32-year-old Kassian had initially signed a PTO with the Anaheim Ducks in August, with aspirations of earning a full-time NHL deal. Unfortunately, he was released from the PTO, and instead of pursuing options in the AHL or Europe, he has decided to retire.
Drafted 13th overall in the 2009 NHL draft, Kassian's career was marked by highs and lows. While he may not have reached the full potential of a power forward he was once projected to be, he enjoyed a respectable 661-game NHL career with several memorable moments.
As a two-time 15-goal scorer, Kassian tallied 92 goals and 203 points during his career, alongside 913 penalty minutes.
He participated in the playoffs during six of his twelve seasons in the NHL, contributing memorable moments for fans, particularly during his time with the Edmonton Oilers.
Kassian also had success in junior hockey, representing Canada at an IIHF Men's World Junior Championship tournament and earning an OHL championship and a Memorial Cup title.
While Kassian's performance had slowed down in recent years (scoring two points in 51 games in his last season), he achieved the remarkable feat of maintaining a steady role in the NHL for over a decade.
Our best wishes go out to Kassian as he enters retirement.
