Last night, Minnesota Wild goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made a bold move, defying the NHL and Gary Bettman, all in the name of honoring his wife's heritage.

Reports surfaced that Fleury aimed to don a new mask, designed to support Native American Heritage and reflect his wife's cultural background. Unfortunately, the NHL shut down his initiative and prohibited him from wearing it.

As part of Native American Heritage Night and to honor his wife, who is native, Marc-Andre Fleury had a custom-designed mask created by Cole Redhorse Taylor. Mask quotes his dad on back, has names of his kids. He's bummed the NHL has informed him he can't even wear in warmups.

Despite warnings of potential punishment from the NHL, Fleury pressed on.

While he didn't get the chance to wear the mask during the game as he served as the backup, Fleury's commitment to a cause he believed in garnered widespread support on social media.

As the situation gained traction online, NHL legend Roberto Luongo chimed in, expressing shock at Fleury's denial and calling out the NHL for it.

«I mean come on what are we even doing here??????»

This incident highlights the NHL's apparent lag in supporting various social issues compared to other sports leagues. Notably, Fleury has not faced any fines so far, contributing to the perception of the league's weakness in handling such scenarios.
