The Colorado Avalanche had a player show up to camp and fail their physical.
Saku Maenalanen, a 2022 Olympic gold medalist, was signed to a PTO earlier this summer, but it was revealed that he didn't pass his physical and has been released by the team.
The 29 year old returned to the NHL last season after three seasons away playing in the KHL and Finland. Maenalanen signed with the Winnipeg Jets on a one-year deal, appearing in 64 games, scoring 4 goals and 10 points while averaging 10:19 in ice time.
The story took an interesting turn today as it was announced that Maenalanen has signed a three-year deal with the SCL Tigers of the NL league (top league in Switzerland)
It does seem peculiar that Maenalanen is healthy/fit enough to sign a three-year deal only a day after being released for failing a physical.
The Avalanche will open their preseason schedule on Sunday afternoon against the Minnesota Wild.
