Pierre-Luc Dubois shares the heartwarming reason he changed
Members of a hockey team often develop the closeness of a family. Players become like brothers and develop life long bonds. So when something happens to a member of the hockey family it can have a major impact on teammates.
Recently, LA Kings forward
Pierre-Luc Dubois sat down with the crew of the Empty Netters Podcast and shared the reason he decided to change his jersey number to 80 when he was traded to Winnipeg, the reason is incredibly touching:
«If I ever win the Stanley Cup, it would be my last name, but it'll be his number»
Dubois explains that he changed his number to honor his former teammate Matiss Kivlenieks who tragically passed away before the start of the 2021-22 season.
Dubois asked Kivlenieks family if they would support him wearing the number 80 before he switched. Not only does Dubois have Kivlenieks with him every time he takes the ice, but he also said that if he were to ever win a Stanley Cup it would his last name on the Cup, but Kivlenieks number.
This is such a heartwarming gesture to the Kivlenieks family and a great way to carry his legacy in hockey on.
