New York Rangers star in legal trouble in Sweden
Unfortunate news for Mike Zibanejad of the New York Rangers and his brother Monir Kalgoum are currently facing some legal trouble in their native Sweden.
According to court documents filed, Zibanejad and Kalgoum put up their houses as collateral for a business loan taken out by the CEO of a burger chain the two had invested in. That loan has not been paid back, and the creditor has now filed a lawsuit.
"A total of four people and one company are being sued. Two of the individuals are New York Rangers star Mika Zibanejad and Monir Kalgoum, who have both invested in the hamburger chain Brödernas."
"Zibanejad and Kalgoum are included in the lawsuit because they chose to pledge their properties as collateral for a loan taken by Brödernas CEO Joakim Wiklander." - Aftonbladet.se/sportbladet The name of the burger chain, Brödernas, means "Brothers" in Swedish. The two share a mother, but have different fathers. It is not the first time Zibanejad and Kalgoum have gone into business together. Kalgoum represented Zibanejad as his agent when he signed an eight year, $68 million contract extension with the New York Rangers in 2021. Kalgoum is a former hockey player who now owns his own hockey agency.
According to the court documents, the $410,000 USD loan has yet to be paid back. They state that the defendants have disputed the payment obligation and the parties have discussed the possibility of reaching a settlement, but failed.
The properties listed in the lawsuit are worth between $275,000 and $500,000 USD. The brothers have yet to respond to the filing.
