Steven Stamkos has been the character of the Tampa Bay Lightning since he joined the team almost 15 years ago. Although there's been rumours about a potential departure in the past, those rumours never came to pass - but now, an insider is reporting that could change. Stamkos is still under contract for next year, but will become a free agent next offseason. Stamkos being linked to a new team is surprising enough, but the team he's linked to is a total shock.
According to Kevin Paul DuPont of the Boston Globe; if Stamkos decides to test free agency this offseason, the Boston Bruins will be the favourites to sign him.
Stamkos, now 33 years old, had somewhat of a resurgent season with the Lightning last year. He appeared in 81 games, recording an impressive 34 goals and 84 points.
The Bruins and Stamkos could be an ideal fit. The Bruins are known to like right-handed centremen, and along with losing both Bergeron and Krejci to retirement this year, the Bruins will be seeking a sufficient replacement to remain competitive in the next few seasons.
It'll still be a improbability that Stamkos goes to free agency in 2024, however, watch for the Bruins to make a hard push to sign him if so.
