The current face and future of the Ducks franchise is notably absent from training camp which begun earlier this week. Star forward Trevor Zegras remains unsigned as an RFA, and is now holding out potentially until the regular season.

The reality that the Ducks and Zegras have been unable to agree to a contract to this point is concerning already, but both sides are known to be settling on a bridge contract according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

While they have the agreement on term, the Ducks and Zegras are miles apart on annual salary. According to TVA Sports' Renaud Lavoie, the Ducks are submitting low-ball contract offers that Zegras isn't responding well to.

Lavoie' report says the Ducks are only offering $3-4M annually, likely significantly less than the 22-year-old was expecting. Given his importance to the franchise now and in the future, as well as the Ducks being uncompetitive and no where near the cap, they certainly have reasons and means to pay Zegras properly.

It now seems that contract talks have stalled and the relationship has deteriorated, but still both sides would rather a deal be made than not. It's unlikely that the Ducks will move Zegras because he's such a vital member of the team, but earlier today, Lavoie also mentioned that the Buffalo Sabres are interested in bringing him in.
