Some disturbing scenes at Place Bell in Laval tonight as forward Filip Engaras of the Utica Comets was taken off on a stretcher in a game against the Laval Rocket.

While the hit on Engaras was a clean one, it was also quite devastating. Engaras was flung into the boards and fell awkwardly up against his back. He subsequently crumpled on the ground and laid mostly motionless. The goaltender for the Rocket came up to check on him and that was when it was apparent that the medical staff needed to come out.

The medical crew worked extremely fast to get Engaras stabilized and onto the stretcher. In the video below, you can see that Engaras was moving his hands while on the stretcher which is a good sign. However, at this stage, there are no other updates on his current condition.

In European leagues, we are seeing more instances of players being taken off on stretchers in this manner. It is certainly a concerning sight, and we just want the players to be safe and okay. We are praying that Engaras is going to be okay and that the injury is not one that is severe or career threatening in any way.

Our thoughts go out to Engaras and the Utica Comets during this difficult time. It is never easy to see a player go down in this fashion. Hockey is a very dangerous sport and we always hope for player safety above everything else.
