Capitals 2023 first round pick Ryan Leonard refuses to sign with team
Ryan Leonard, the Washington Capitals' first-round draft pick in 2023, saw his rookie season at Boston College end in disappointment as his team was defeated 2-0 by the Denver Pioneers in the 2024 National Championship game.
Despite the setback, Leonard's standout performance throughout the season has left Capitals fans eager to see him turn pro.
However, those fans will have to be patient, as Leonard has decided to return to Boston College for his sophomore year. Capitals President and General Manager Brian MacLellan expressed his full support for Leonard's choice, acknowledging the opportunity for Leonard to further develop his skills in college.
"Ryan Leonard indicated his desire to return for his sophomore season at Boston College. We support Ryan's decision to return to one of the best programs in the nation to continue his development," MacLellan said. "Ryan showed great leadership and made tremendous progress during his first year, which saw him score the most goals by a freshman in Boston College program history and the third-most goals in the NCCAA. We will continue to monitor his development and progress next year and look forward to watching Ryan build upon his successful freshman season."
The 19-year-old forward had an impressive season, scoring 31 goals and amassing 60 points in 41 games. His decision to stay in college comes after a successful stint with Team USA at the World Juniors, where he helped bring home a gold medal.
Motivated by his near miss for a college championship, Leonard is determined to lead his team to victory in the upcoming season.
