Alexander Ovechkin is currently 41 goals away from tying Wayne Gretzky for the NHL record of 894 career goals, and he is expected to beat the record within the next two years.

With 853 career goals, Ovechkin has already etched his name into the history books. He is the greatest Russian hockey player of all time, and there is nothing that can change that right now. Moreover, beating Gretzky's record would be a monumental achievement for his overall legacy.
However, in a recent interview, Ovechkin's mom made it clear that he doesn't really care about the record. Tatyana Ovechkina noted he is simply a naturally gifted goal scorer and that if he tries hard enough, the goals will just come naturally.

"Sasha just plays hockey, not bothering his head with personal statistics. And the pucks they'll come, they won't go anywhere. We all know that Sasha loves and knows how to score. God willing, he'll succeed."

These comments come after Ovechkin made the surprising revelation that he wants to finish his career in Russia with Dynamo Moscow. Only time will tell whether or not he makes that happen. What we do know is, Washington Capitals fans want him to stick around for at least a few more years, and they would love to see him smash Gretzky's record on home ice.
Do you believe that Ovi can beat the scoring record, once and for all? Let us know in the poll down below. Additionally, stay tuned to Hockey Unplugged for the latest news and updates from around the hockey world.
