According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, the team is going to sell for a whopping $2 billion which is double the previous record for an NHL franchise sale. The record was previously held by the Ottawa Senators who were purchased by Michael Andlauer for $950 million.
Doug Ostrover is reportedly the one who is buying the team. He is the CEO of the investment firm Blue Owl Capital. Despite the sale, Vinik will maintain control of the team's operations and he will also maintain an ownership stake.
The Lightning has been incredibly successful over the last few years. In 2020 and 2021, they were able to win back-to-back Stanley Cups. While they just lost Steven Stamkos, there is still hope that this team can compete come April of 2025.
