Former 1st round pick has hit a wall in negotiations with his team
There comes a time in every young player's career where he feels as though he's getting the raw end of the deal and views himself as someone deserving of a larger role and better pay. Such is the case for Philadelphia Flyers prospect Morgan Frost this summer, but according to reports, the team is hesitant about giving him a significant raise.
"Hearing from two sources close to the situation that the Flyers and Morgan Frost have not made any progress on a contract." - Christopher Maher
Frost, now 24, has been a bit more of a project than I think anyone believed he would be. As a former 1st round pick, the sky was believed to be the limit for him, but for whatever reason, it just hasn't clicked for him as quickly at the NHL level. However, in 2023-24, he showed his first real signs of life, scoring 19 goals and tallying 46 points, career highs in both categories.
There's very little doubt Frost and his agent are seeking more money on his next deal, but there's a risk involved for new Flyers GM Danny Briere. Will Frost continue to progress, or has he already reached his ceiling?
Philadelphia traded Brayden Schenn to the St. Louis Blues at the 2017 draft in order to acquire the pick used to take Frost. Then Flyers GM Ron Hextall had nothing but praise for him, saying the whole scouting staff agreed he was a player to take.
"There are very few guys where our whole staff likes the guy, and our whole staff liked this guy. He's an extremely intelligent player and reads the ice well. Good two-way player who showed up good in the testing." - Ron Hextall, NHL.com Frost is a restricted free agent, which means that the team currently has most of the leverage here. Frost can still request a trade if he feels that there is a better opportunity and more money out there for him somewhere else, but the Flyers don't need to oblige him. The other avenue that is available to him is signing an offer sheet with another team, but the Flyers would have the chance to match an offer sheet, which would allow the team to retain the player.
