Overall, Swayman is a restricted free agent and is trying to get himself $10 million per year. As for the Bruins, they only have $8.6 million worth of cap space left, and they don't want to be left in a situation where they are right up against the cap. No matter what, it is an ugly situation that has left Bruins fans scared about their future. Without a deal, Swayman could very well decide to hold out of Bruins training camp, which would be disastrous.
While speaking to Marc Lewis, Swayman offered up some comments that should scare both the Bruins organization and its fans. Essentially, Swayman is educated in business, and he understands full and well what he is worth. Furthermore, he has studied the salary cap and where it will be in a few years. Not to mention, he is trying to get other goalies paid, which is bad news for GMs around the league.
It is clear that Swayman is an incredibly intelligent individual who should not be underestimated. He knows what he wants, and he will do anything to get it. Considering how well he has played for Boston, it is hard to claim he does not deserve it. Having said that, the Bruins will have to make a very difficult decision about whether or not a goalie is worth paying eight figures per year.
