TRADE: Buffalo Sabres Trade Their Captain In Major Blockbuster Trade
Per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Buffalo Sabres have made a significant move, trading their captain and veteran forward Kyle Okposo to the Florida Panthers.
Darren Dreger has provided further details, indicating that the Sabres will receive a conditional draft pick in return: a seventh-round pick that could escalate to a fifth-round pick if Florida clinches the Stanley Cup.
Additionally, the Sabres acquire prospect defenseman Calle Sjalin.
The Sabres have confirmed the trade, solidifying the transaction.
It's been rumored that Okposo expressed interest in joining the Panthers for a chance at the championship. This move allows the Sabres to honor their captain's wishes, providing him an opportunity he hasn't had in eight years.
Okposo's leadership and character are expected to greatly benefit the Panthers. The 35-year-old forward, who joined the Sabres in July 2016 as an unrestricted free agent, served as the team's captain since the 2022-23 season.
