The Columbus Blue Jackets are potentially gearing up for a significant roster change as insider information has unveiled their asking price for Finnish forward Patrik Laine. Amidst ongoing rumors, it's become clear that Laine's future with the team is uncertain, and the Blue Jackets are looking to make the most of a potential trade.

Patrik Laine's 2023-24 season was marred by an upper-body injury that sidelined him for most of the year. A setback in late January further complicated his situation, leading to his entry into the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. This move effectively ended his season, and he remains unavailable for direct communication with teams interested in acquiring him until he exits the program.

During a recent radio interview, Aaron Portzline from The Athletic provided insights into the Blue Jackets' strategy for trading Laine. Portzline indicated that the team is seeking a return focused on draft picks and prospects, rather than a current roster player. This preference stems from the team's off-season additions and a need to manage Laine's substantial $8.7 million annual salary over the next two years.

Portzline shared on TSN 690 Montreal that Columbus will likely have to retain a portion of Laine's salary to facilitate a trade.

Blue Jackets General Manager Don Waddell also addressed the situation in a TSN radio interview, acknowledging Laine's wish for a new beginning elsewhere. Waddell emphasized the team's commitment to exploring all options but did not entirely dismiss the possibility of Laine returning to Columbus if a satisfactory trade cannot be arranged.

"Patrik's made it clear that, even before all the changes this summer, he would like a fresh start someplace. We will look at it when the time comes - which hopefully is very soon - all the options. Now, I can't rule out any options, even returning here because it takes two teams to make a trade and if there's not a trade that makes any sense to us, then we have to just deal with what reality is."

Waddell further commented on the process, noting the involvement of Laine's agent, Andy Scott, in finding a suitable fit for the forward.

"[Laine's agent] Andy Scott told him multiple times that we will make sure we look at everything and know the situation, and we know Patrik's feelings and we can find the right fit, certainly we will do that. But, if not, we'll have to just deal with it."

Laine, originally from Tampere, Finland, participated in only 18 games this season due to his injuries, scoring six goals and three assists. He also accumulated six penalty minutes and had a minus-ten rating. Despite the challenges, Laine's talent remains undeniable, making him a valuable asset for teams looking to bolster their offensive lineup.

As the off-season progresses, the hockey world will closely watch how the Blue Jackets navigate this situation. The outcome of Laine's potential trade could significantly impact the team's future and shape the trajectory of Laine's career.
