USF head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim unexpectedly passes away, Tampa Bay Lightning pay homage
Tragic news has hit the college basketball world today as University of South Florida head coach Amir Abdur-Rahim has passed away at the age of 43.
Abdur-Rahim was a rising star in the head coaching world and was beloved by his players. He was turning the University of South Florida into a Cinderella story, and his sudden passing could not be any more tragic. Fans were shocked by the news as the team made the announcement last night.
"All of us with South Florida Athletics are grieving with the loved ones of Coach Abdur-Rahim," USF athletic director Michael Kelly said in a passionate statement, following Abdur-Rahim's death. "He was authentic, driven, and his infectious personality captivated all of Bulls Nation. Coach Abdur-Rahim leaves a lasting impact on our student-athletes, the University, and the community. We are supporting those closest to him, including his family, team, and athletics staff, to ensure they have the resources they need to deal with this tremendous loss."
As a South Florida sports team, the Tampa Bay Lightning did the classy thing and acknowledged Abdur-Rahim on social media. It was a great gesture, especially when you consider how the Lightning and Abdur-Rahim operated in two vastly different sports.
This is a tragedy that will have a huge ripple effect on the basketball world. While there are hundreds of teams in the NCAA, it is still a tight-knit community. Abdur-Rahim had support from many of his peers, and we cannot imagine what they and his players must be feeling right about now.
Our heart goes out to Abdur-Rahim's family during this incredibly difficult time. Our heart also goes out to the University of South Florida community. We hope all of those affected are able to find peace and comfort.
RIP Amir Abdur-Rahim.
