In February 2024, the Kings dismissed McLellan as the team struggled to secure wins. At the time of his firing, McLellan still had one season remaining on his contract.
NHL coaches continue to receive their salaries even after being fired if their contracts still have term remaining. However, these payments stop if the coach takes on another NHL job. Because McLellan is still under contract, the Kings have the authority to block him from taking a new coaching position in the league, which they have done. According to Aaron Portzline, McLellan was the top candidate for the head coaching role with the Columbus Blue Jackets, but an agreement couldn't be reached among the parties involved.
If a new contract pays less than the previous one, the former team must top up the difference. It's possible that McLellan's potential contract with Columbus offered less money than his deal with the Kings, prompting LA to hope that Columbus would improve their offer to avoid paying the difference.
Given McLellan's extensive coaching experience, it's unsurprising that he is receiving offers from other NHL teams. He has coached nearly 1,150 regular-season games with the Kings, San Jose Sharks, and Edmonton Oilers, amassing a record of 598 wins, 412 losses, and 134 overtime losses.
