Kyle Dubas appears to have his work cut out for him as the trade deadline approaches, with many decisions to make and a possible roster overhaul at stake.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are having a miserable 2024-25 NHL season, and their playoff aspirations are rapidly diminishing.

The Penguins are all but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs

They possess only 58 points in 63 games and are far outside of the playoff picture and at the very bottom of the Metropolitan Division with a 24-29-10 record.
They trail the Detroit Red Wings by eight points for the Eastern Conference's final wild-card spot and such a late-season turnaround would be highly improbable.
As such, rumors of trades involving the Penguins have been circulating around the Pittsburgh region, including around franchise cornerstone Sidney Crosby.
The Penguins are still not about to trade their veteran captain out ahead of this Friday's trade deadline.
All of that being said, aside from Crosby, and perhaps Evgeni Malkin, no one on the roster is untouchable.
"For Kyle Dubas, the deadline represents an opportunity to continue his mission of turning over the roster," per Chris Johnston and Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.

"There are very few untouchables in Pittsburgh, with the GM prioritizing young NHL players, prospects and draft picks as a return in any deals for his established roster players. While not stocked with any of the most-prized rentals on the market, Pittsburgh would like to be active. The organization has no intention of putting its biggest name in play - Sidney Crosby - as it tries to retool its way back to respectability, and the 37-year-old captain remains an impactful player."

The front office is very busy trying to figure out the best way to rebuild the team, and that will mean a number of players could be headed somewhere else.
A week from now, the Penguins might be icing a completely different beast with management's attention shifting to the future.
