Johnny & Matthew Gaudreau were killed by Sean Higgins while they were riding their bicycles in New Jersey last week.

Higgins admitted to drinking five or six beers prior to getting into the car. Overall, this is reckless behavior, and it has subsequently led to charges of driving under the influence and death by auto. Today, Higgins will be in court where he will learn whether or not he will be bailed out of jail.

Meanwhile, fans are curious about the maximum sentence that Higgins could receive for his actions. Well, according to New Jersey law, death by auto charges come with a 5-10 year sentence. Since Higgins has two of these charges, he could face anywhere between 10 to 20 years in prison, if convicted.

For many, this is simply not enough. After cutting two lives short, there are fans out there who believe Higgins should be locked up for life. However, the justice system doesn't work like that. Instead, fans will just have to wait for the legal process to work itself out. Only time will tell whether or not Higgins goes to trial, or simply takes a guilty plea and gets this all over with.

Our heart goes out to the Gaudreau family during this devastating time. We hope they get the help they need and deserve from the hockey community.
