In 2015, Subban and his foundation made a significant commitment of $10 million to the hospital, marking the largest philanthropic contribution by a Canadian athlete.
Although he later moved on to play for the Nashville Predators and the New Jersey Devils, Subban remained deeply involved in the lives of the young patients at the hospital, particularly Loic Bydal.
Tragically, Subban shared devastating news on Tuesday via his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), announcing Loic's passing. Reflecting on their bond, Subban, now a TV analyst, wrote:
Loic's resilience was a source of inspiration for Subban and others, as he graduated from high school in 2021 despite facing significant health challenges. Afflicted with Morquio syndrome, a rare genetic disorder impacting various aspects of a child's health and physical abilities, Loic underwent surgery in 2012, resulting in the loss of his ability to walk and necessitating permanent ventilator support.
Despite his career transitions, Subban has remained true to his commitment to supporting the children at the Montreal Children's Hospital. Undoubtedly, he will continue to honor his dear friend Loic's memory through his dedication to this cause.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to Subban, as well as to the family and friends of Loic Bydal.
