NHL arena requires over 60 million dollars in repairs and upgrades
The Columbus Blue Jackets' home, Nationwide Arena, is in dire need of repairs totaling over $60 million. Without these repairs, the arena may face significant issues that could render it unusable.
Maintaining arenas for NHL teams is a complex and costly task. Modern facilities typically have a lifespan of just over 25 years before they require significant updates. Nationwide Arena is no exception, necessitating a range of repairs from cosmetic improvements to major structural fixes.
Jason Newland of The Hockey News provided a detailed list of some of the necessary repairs:
Roof - $9 million
Cooling Towers - $7.5 million
New Scoreboard - $8.5 million
Fire Alarm replacement - $2.5 million
Suite renovations - $1 million
Club Level renovations - $1.7 million
Concession stand overhaul - $1.5 million
Party Tower LED improvements - $675k
While this list covers some of the most crucial updates, it is not exhaustive. Essential upgrades like the roof and cooling towers are critical for maintaining the arena's structural integrity and ensuring proper climate control. The replacement of the fire alarm system is vital for the safety of everyone in the building.
Although items like a new scoreboard might be seen as luxury upgrades, they are part of keeping the arena competitive and appealing to fans. The necessity for these updates is further emphasized by the multiple teams and events that use the facility.
It's important to note that the financial burden of these repairs will not fall entirely on the Blue Jackets. However, the urgency of these repairs cannot be understated, and they must be addressed promptly to avoid future complications.
