Higgins allegedly killed the two brothers as they were riding bicycles in Salem, New Jersey. The report states that Higgins swerved lanes while trying to pass a vehicle and he ended up hitting the two men. This led to their deaths, and many believe Higgins should face the full wrath of the courts.
According to TMZ, Judge Silviano denied bail for Higgins. This means he will have to remain in jail until further notice. This was not what Higgins and his attorneys wanted. The defense argued that Higgins is an upstanding citizen who should be let go with conditions. However, the judge decided otherwise. Higgins could be seen crying in court throughout all of this.
At the time of his arrest, Higgins reportedly had a BAC of .087. Moreover, he failed field sobriety tests. Following this decision by the judge, it should be noted that Higgins is still facing two counts of death by auto and could face 20 years in prison if convicted.
Our heart goes out to the Gaudreau family during this incredibly difficult time. We cannot imagine what they must be going through right now. We hope the hockey community continues to show them support throughout all of this.
