For a while now, there has been no increase in the NHL wage cap. The cap was fixed at $81.5 million from 2019 to 22 and increased by just two million dollars in the final two seasons to $83.5 million.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced early in December that the salary cap would rise by $4.2 million to $87.7 million for the upcoming season. This season, the league brought in over $6.2 billion in revenue.
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period has confirmed that the wage cap will rise by an additional 5% to $92 million for the 20252026 season.
Over the past few years, NHL players' approaches to free agency have changed. The stagnating cap was causing players to choose short-term contracts rather locking into security. I believe that now that there has been a consistent rise, players will start to seek out long-term contracts once more.
Superstars like Steven Stamkos, Sam Reinhart, who scored fifty seven goals, and Jake Guentzel are among the finest players in the 2024 free agent class. With other gems like Tyler Bertuzzi, Elias Lindholm, Jonathan Marchessault, and Vladimir Tarasenko searching for new agreements on July 1st, it is deep.
Although the 2024 free agency class is strong, it pales in contrast to the 2025 class. If they become available, franchise-changing players will be available. At the top of the rankings are Mitch Marner, Leon Draisaitl, and Mikko Rantanen. Sidney Crosby, Brad Marchand, Aaron Ekblad, Brock Boeser, John Tavares, and Victor Hedman are just a few of the many talented players that could be available in the summer of 2025.
