Dean Evason Named Head Coach of Columbus Blue Jackets for 2024-25 Season
The Columbus Blue Jackets have made a significant move in their quest for success by appointing Dean Evason as their new head coach for the 2024-25 NHL season. Evason, who previously helmed the Minnesota Wild, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record to Columbus.
The announcement was made official by Blue Jackets President and General Manager Don Waddell, who revealed that Evason has signed a multi-year contract with the team. Evason will be formally introduced at a press conference scheduled for Tuesday, July 23 at Nationwide Arena.
"Columbus Blue Jackets President and General Manager Don Waddell today announced that Dean Evason has agreed to a multi-year contract to serve as head coach of the National Hockey League club. Evason will be introduced at a press conference at Nationwide Arena on Tuesday, July 23 at 10:30 a.m."
Evason's tenure with the Minnesota Wild was marked by impressive achievements. He compiled a coaching record of 147-77-27 over 251 games across five seasons. His efforts earned him a finalist spot for the Jack Adams Award in the 2020-21 season, and he finished fourth in the voting for the same award in the 2021-22 season.
Waddell expressed his enthusiasm for Evason's appointment, highlighting the qualities that make him a valuable addition to the Blue Jackets.
"Dean Evason brings to coaching what he brought as a player – passion, hard work and tenacity – and I couldn't be happier that he will serve as the next head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets," said Blue Jackets General Manager Don Waddell. "He has spent well over two decades in this league as a player, assistant coach and head coach and I believe that experience, combined with the outstanding person he is, will allow Dean to get the best out of our players and put us in a position to succeed as a team."
Beyond his coaching career, Evason has an extensive background as an NHL player. He played over 800 regular season games, primarily with the Washington Capitals and Hartford Whalers. He also had stints with the San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars, and Calgary Flames.
The Blue Jackets and their fans will be eagerly watching to see how Evason's leadership and experience translate into success on the ice. With his track record and dedication, there's optimism that he can guide Columbus to new heights in the coming seasons.
