As of July 1st, former Arizona Coyotes first-round pick Victor Soderstrom became a restricted free agent, and talks between him and the Utah HC organization have been sparse. The 2019 11th overall pick now faces an uncertain future, with possibilities ranging from a trade to playing overseas in Europe.
Reports indicate that Soderstrom has recently changed his representation, parting ways with Quartexx Hockey. This move has added to the speculation that he might opt to play in Europe for the 2024-25 season if a deal with Utah does not materialize. Craig Morgan of PHNX Sports highlighted this potential shift in a recent social media post.
Soderstrom, 23, began his North American career in 2021 and has mostly played in the American Hockey League with the Tucson Roadrunners. He has also appeared in 53 NHL games with the now-dissolved Arizona Coyotes. Last season, he posted career highs with nine goals and 23 assists, totaling 32 points in 62 games with Tucson, and helped the team make a playoff appearance.
Despite his solid performance, Soderstrom's future with Utah remains in limbo. The team issued him a qualifying offer last month to retain his rights, but negotiations have yet to yield a new contract.
The coming weeks and months will be crucial in determining where Soderstrom will play next season. Utah HC hopes to secure his talents for their roster, but the possibility of him continuing his career in Europe remains on the table.
