Hockey gear can be pretty expensive, and CCM has always been good about having options in all price ranges. Unfortunately, that could change very soon. According to Rick Westhead, CCM has been sold by its private equity firm, Birch Hill Equity Partners.
Seven years ago, they acquired CCM from Adidas for a price of $110 million. Now, the company is set to be sold for a whopping $570 million. This is a huge return on investment and just goes to show that CCM is a thriving business especially with hockey exploding in popularity.
As Westhead reports, Bauer and True Hockey could be next when it comes to potential sales. Although for now, many are worried about the state of CCM and its prices, in the future. Westhead warns that the price of skates and other pieces of gear could increase significantly from here on out.
This would be disastrous for the sport. Hockey already has an expensive point of entry, and increasing that point of entry would deter youth from signing up for minor hockey. Not to mention, it hurts adults who may not be able to afford the new gear that they need in order to play the sport that they love.
