The Colorado Avalanche suffered a massive loss, after forward Mikko Rantanen was injured by a hit from Edmonton Oilers defenseman, Mattias Ekholm.

Head Coach Jared Bednar would be made available to answer media and was asked about Rantanen's status.
According to Bednar, Rantanen had entered concussion protocol after his hit from Mattias Ekholm. Rantanen did work out on Saturday and would skate on Sunday.
"#Avs coach Jared Bednar said Mikko Rantanen is in concussion protocol, but he worked out yesterday and skated on his own this morning. Called him day-to-day." Corey Masisak said in a post on X.

The forward would wait for a pass, as Mattias Ekholm would lay a devastating hit on Rantanen.
Rantanen had to be helped to his feet by an official, as he was shaky getting up afterward to make it to the bench. He would then head to the teams dressing room, and would not return Friday night.
Fans believed that Mattias Ekholm should have been penalized for the hit, but the Oilers defenseman would never be issued a penalty.
The Avalanche are currently left 5 with games to play in the NHL regular season and are in a tight race for the Central Division title. Having Mikko Rantanen out will make the competition between themselves, the Dallas Stars, and the Winnipeg Jets perilous as they look to end the season on a high note.
Rantanen has played 77 games for the Colorado Avalanche this season and has recorded 102 points(40 G, 62 A), 50 PIMS, and a plus-minus of -20.
