Washington Capitals buy popular hockey website plan to close it down
The well-known website CapFriendly has been formally acquired by the Washington Capitals, and the NHL organization intends to shut it down.
For years, the hockey world has relied on the well-known website CapFriendly. Officially, the gold standard for questions about salaries and NHL transactions has been sold. Many of the website's devoted followers were taken aback when the news was revealed earlier this afternoon.
On his X account, Elliotte Friedman revealed that the website had been formally acquired by the Washington Capitals. Even though the company consented to let this sale go through on July 5th, the agreement is practically finalized. The website will be able to cover both the draft and the start of free agency thanks to the postponed sale.
It won't happen until July, but according to multiple sources, the Washington Capitals have reached an agreement to purchase the outstanding CapFriendly website.
These same sources stressed that both the Capitals and CapFriendly wanted the site to be publicly available and independently operated through the 2024 NHL Draft and the start of free agency, so it is not expected the sale will be official until at least July 5.
Following the formal closure of its predecessor, CapGeek, the website was established in 2015. The NHL has notified those teams that have contracts in place to use the website and its technology that those contracts will expire. Friedman states that the website will formally go offline on the day of the sale.
You can definitely see why a team would want this infrastructure. After the transaction officially closes, the website will go dark
At that point hockey fans will be forced to seek out alternative options for all of their salary cap information.
