In his first 91 NHL games, he has 40 points including 18 goals and 22 assists. He is a player that is very likely to take a huge leap this year and we are already kind of seeing it. In the first eight games of the season, he has a total of four goals. He looks pretty good out there right now, and Leafs fans should be very encouraged about him.
However, he also needs to get a new contract extension. While Leafs fans would probably love to have him back, it is is looking more and more likely that this will cost the team a pretty penny. In fact, NHL insider Nick Kypreos now believes that things are about to get a bit expensive for the Leafs.
Kypreos used Juraj Slafkovsky of the Montreal Canadiens as a comparable for Knies. Slafkovsky is destined to be a superstar and the team is now paying him like one at over $7.5 million. With the Salary Cap going up and Knies' potential on another level, Kypreos believes the Leafs star may just get over $7 million.
Considering the fact that Knies is still unproven, this does feel like a truly outrageous number that has no basis in reality. However, you never really know. When it comes to contracts in the National Hockey League, stranger things have happened before.
