Auston Matthews to officially strip John Tavares of Maple Leafs captaincy
Auston Matthews has been the Toronto Maple Leafs' franchise player for almost a decade and now, and it is culminating in him getting the captaincy.
According to Darren Dreger of TSN, Matthews will be getting the captaincy in what is being described as Matthews' "evolution as a leader." Of course, this means John Tavares will be losing the captaincy. However, Tavares is happy with the change and even worked with GM Brad Treliving on this news. Regardless, we're sure Leafs fans are going to find this move to be quite curious.
The Maple Leafs have championship or bust expectations. They have an exceptionally talented roster, however, they have yet to make it past the second round. Needless to say, with Matthews at the helm, the Leafs are looking for different results. Only time will tell whether or not he can deliver them.
