Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews made a critical error last night in overtime against the Boston Bruins and it lost the Leafs the hockey game.

Prior to overtime, Matthews scored a clutch goal with just 90 seconds left to play. It was a massive tally that had Leafs fans hopefully that they could win the game in overtime. However, that is not how the game ended up playing out. Instead, Matthews made a horrendous error in the middle of OT that led to the game-winner by the Bruins. After the game, Matthews got brutally honest about the goal.

"I thought somebody was coming back, and then as I went to pass it, I looked up, and it wasn't the case. So I just tried to get back and make a play, and just an unfortunate bounce."

Craig Berube, the head coach for the Leafs, was pretty forgiving with his captain. He noted that the team could have done a better job with supporting Matthews, who has been a consommate professional as of late.

"We gotta support him a little bit better on that play. We left him alone there. It was a mistake by everybody out there"

Now that Matthews is the captain, he has a lot of responsibility and weight on his shoulders. However, it may take him a while to get settled into that role. If the Leafs don't start winning, though, fans will get restless.
