Today, the Toronto Maple Leafs officially named Auston Matthews as the captain of their hockey team.

Of course, this means that John Tavares will no longer be the leader of the franchise. According to reports, the catalyst for this decision was the Leafs' defeat at the hands of the Boston Bruins in the playoffs. Needless to say, this was a tough decision for everyone involved.
The Maple Leafs held a press conference for the announcement where numerous Leafs players were in attendance. Among them were guys like Morgan Reilly and even Mitch Marner. Meanwhile, the team explained why they gave Matthews the captaincy.
As for John Tavares, he was at the press conference where he passed the torch to Matthews in both a literal and figurative sense. Overall, it was an incredible display and Leafs fans are going to remember this for a very long time.
